Character Name: Soul O'Brien
Series: Half Bad: The Bastard Son and the Devil Himself
Age: late 40s; he's a father of teenagers
From When?: Soul is coming from his death at the hands of his own daughter, Annalise, when she literally just tore him apart with her own magic.
Inmate Justification: Soul is a shitheel on multiple levels.

The first is that he *pretends* to be a reasonable, kind, thoughtful, peace-minded person, but what he really is is someone who's weak and who tries to use social niceties to disguise his weakness, his cowardice, and his willingness to do awful things to benefit himself. He, on a personal level, has always had insecurities about his own inborn power and when he saw the means to change it and 'upgrade' it, was willing to both kill his own brother and murder a teenager to do it. He leaves his allies behind to die, uses his power to disrespect/manipulate/abuse anyone he doesn't like, and is just a general piece of shit to other people while smiling and playing the family man and leader of his community. Also ZERO honor: he killed his own brother mid conversation for doing absolutely nothing but being useful for a spell component and murdered a pregnant woman on orders without pause.

The second is that he upholds a false dichotomy and villainizes blood witches, using his 'failed' peace talks as good reason to literally exterminate them from the UK and then to treat them like subhumans because he's a Fairborne witch and that makes him 'better' than them. He's aware of the fact that the Fairborns have done atrocities to the Blood Witches and yet indoctrinates both his own children and others in hunting them down and killing them for existing anywhere near them.

The third is that he cares about himself and as a very distant second, his own family more than anyone or anything else. He allows multiple people to die or be hurt to keep the secret of his own daughter's very destructive power and he's more than willing to groom Jessica Byrne to be his little enforcer even though she's legitimately an evil person who enjoys torture and murdered her own teammate through inaction.

He is in every respect a weak, insecure, fantasy racist who used lies, manipulation, political power, and other people towards his own ends. The only reason I'd think he's redeemable is that Jessica's sadism and inhumanity actually does squick him out a little and he apologizes constantly for what he does to no one; this man feels bad about it but he doesn't actually Not Do It.

Arrival: He agreed. Anything to get back to life again. He figures as long as he behaves well enough this won't be hard at all. After all, he's an upstanding member of the community, a father, a protector. Maybe he had a bit of a downturn there by the end, giving into temptation and making himself a blood witch for power but he was under pressure! That doesn't really say anything about him, of course. He was trying to protect his daughter!

Abilities/Powers: Soul is a Fairborn witch, meaning that he can use witchcraft in the form of ritual/potion/magical tools as well as his inborn magical ability (which for him is to be able to grow and control the growth of plants, though not like Poison Ivy, like how normal plants would grow just faster/better; he can grow you a pumpkin the size of a Buick, but he couldn't make the plants attack you, much to his frustration). He also heals significantly more quickly than normal people.

Before his death, he performed a dark ritual (making a Witch's bottle) to make himself into a heart eater blood witch, meaning that he has all of the powers of the witches whose hearts he ate, the means to hear people's heartbeats, much faster healing, and the ability to turn into a wolf. These include things like lightning, fire, rain, etc. big boom powers.

...he's getting none of those. I'm saying for entry, he's coming in with 'plant grow power' and his original Fairborn healing and nothing else.

Inmate Information:

World Info: There's two kinds of witches. They exist in secret in our world. One, Fairborns, are supposedly the 'good' witches and the Blood witches the 'bad'. Fairborns have done what they can to eradicate the 'Blood witch scourge' from the UK as per the beginning of canon, drive them all out, but one (Marcus Edge) fought against them very much in the vein of a 'terrorist', including turning what was supposed to be a 'peace' talk into a slaughterhouse, murdering a bunch of witches, eating their hearts, and taking their powers before running off into the night. He ended up impregnating a Fairborn witch, and she gave birth to a baby named Nathan. Nathan was raised by his Fairborn grandmother, who always believed he was a good lad and his half-sister, Jessica, who is a fucking evil little asshole who tormented him for being 'half' of Marcus Edge the worst person ever.

Him: Soul is a Fairborn witch, born to a family with largely very peaceful powers. It's what he's leaned into re: his reputation and how he was able to make his way up the political ladder.

But it always rankled him; he always wanted something 'powerful', the kind of powers you can use to win wars, not to keep people fed and plants growing. He went into the Fairborn Hunters and used his willingness to do awful shit (like, say, murder a pregnant woman in her bed) to climb the ladder, eventually joining the Fairborn Council (leadership of the Fairborn witches in the UK).

He apparently tried to have a 'peace talk' with the leader of the Blood Witches (Marcus Edge) that turned into a slaughter, now known as the Peace Massacre. This becomes his justification for a lot of things, but the thing he leaves out is that the Fairborns demanded that Blood Witches would obey Fairborn law and didn't want to do anything to make up for the massacres they committed against the Blood Witches including the mother of the guy they'd called on for the talks. But he takes the reputation hit very poorly and uses it to justify a lot of bullshit as to why he's just so unfortunate and everything is unfair and people should just give him power and authority since it was really just a little oopsie. /sarcasm

But eventually, he takes on the position of being responsible for running the Fairborn Hunters, a paramilitary unit who train to kill Blood Witches. One of the hunters he takes a special interest in is Jessica Byrne, the daughter of Marcus Edge's Fairborn lover (Nathan's mother) who has felt tainted all her life by being associated with the Blood Witch leader. He encourages her sadistic, cruel, violent, and even murderous behavior, facilitating her rise in power and taking her on as his personal protege since she's willing to do awful and deeply illegal shit (even by their own laws) to serve his ends and amuse herself with cruelty.

He raises both of his children with this propaganda, and it sticks with his son who upon moving to the town that canon starts in begins to abuse and bully Nathan for no reason other than 'existing near him' to the point where Nathan finally hits back. The response for this, of course, and for said son stabbing Nathan and leaving him to die is to send Nathan for grueling and torturous training with inhuman conditions (they literally lock him in a cage at night) while life continues as usual. He allows his hunters to abuse and beat the shit out of Nathan for their own amusement and catharsis even though Nathan has done nothing wrong. Nathan, for reference, is a teenager the same age as his own kids and despite the fact that he's relying on Nathan to 'kill the wolf' for the Fairborns and protect his people, they abuse and allow attacks against him constantly. Soul is the main reason for this.

Once Marcus moves to save his own son from this bullshit, Soul uses the opportunity to drag Nathan off to do a Witch Bottle ritual to steal his power from him (cause you know evil magic on a non-consenting teenager you've abused and drugged, totally cool even before it's DEEPLY ILLEGAL even according to his own shitty society) and keeps it secret, using Jessica's loyalty to keep it from others. Then, when Nathan and Annalise (his daughter) escape, he keeps secret Annalise's very destructive decimation power even from his own people despite the fact that it could get all of them killed since she doesn't really know how to use it well.

In chasing them, they basically commit all of the 'cops on a power trip' crimes they possibly can, and he allows Jessica to psychologically and physically torture an innocent boat driver purely for having helped them unwittingly cross to France. When Ceelia, his lieutenant calls him on this, he just brushes off her cruelty and sadism and makes it clear that he'll allow her to do whatever to attain their goals. This does not get better, as he and Jessica murder both Blood Witches and Fairborns left and right in pursuit of Nathan, to kill Marcus in his obsession, and for him to gain the power to finish the Witch Bottle, become a Heart Eater blood witch, and be able to gain powers. He literally massacres his own people to get their powers from them and he was about to kill his own daughter to get hers from her before she turned the tables and killed him.

Path to Redemption: Soul needs to cut the shit. He needs to stop being willing to perpetrate a bullshit system of oppression, he needs to stop being driven by a thirst for power, and he needs to stop legitimizing abuse and violence for his own ends. He needs to face up to killing his own brother, to being the reason why peace could never be achieved (because it was sought without any concern for Marcus Edge's grievance or losses and without a realistic idea of what 'peace talks' are), to being a shitty father who was willing to devour his own daughter's heart for power, and for hurting or allowing the harm of so so SO many people. He needs to address his cowardice and his insecurities about his own power and see them for what they are: an incredible ability that just happens to not be combat effective. He needs to become what he thought he was and give up his desire to 'win' against the blood witches when what he really needs to do is to find accord and stop the fighting and killing.
